Welcome back to our MIAA Class of 2023 Profile Series! This is the second written interview with a 2023 Hope College Football Commit. If you missed last week’s, please check it out here: Eli Vanderveen: Hope College Football Commit.
As I mentioned in that article, we are planning to do a couple of these interviews for every MIAA school in Michigan (sorry Trine) for the class of 2023. These interviews will be a bit of a prelude / teaser leading up to a big spring article breaking down and ranking each incoming class for all the Michigan MIAA schools (look for that to come out in a couple weeks in early April). NCAA Division III does not get enough love! We are very excited to put all of this together to show some love to the MIAA, the schools in the MIAA, the MIAA football programs, and the athletes that play at this level (there’s a TON of talent).
Before getting into this week’s interview, just a reminder to subscribe to our Substack! It is a brand new medium for us that we are very excited to utilize to bring a different form of content to our followers who enjoy our focus on everything football in Michigan! Kory just put out an article on the Detroit Lions and their upcoming draft class, check it out: Detroit Lions 2023 Draft. We look forward to writing many more articles on a variety of topics relating to every level of football here in Michigan!

Interview Questions
In your time playing for Mason High School, what do you think has prepared you the most for playing football collegiately? BI: I think the thing that made me the most ready to play at the collegiate level was the conditioning during the season. We trained super hard all off-season, and during the season we consistently practiced hard and that led me to feeling ready to play at the college level.
How was the recruiting process overall for you in terms of communicating with schools and coaches and making on-campus visits? BI: My recruiting was super chaotic. I’d constantly be texting coaches setting up visits and calls with them.
What was it about Hope College and Hope Football that led you to commit to them over the other schools that showed interest in you? BI: Hope College showed me love from the start whereas some of the other bigger schools seemed to be texting me as if they had to text me. But the coaches at Hope texted me as if they wanted to. And that to me makes a major difference.
What excites you the most about Hope Football’s 2023 class? BI: The players they recruited this class are the real deal. Some of them, including myself, were projected to go [NCAA] Division 2 and somehow convinced many real game changers to commit!
What excites you the most about playing for Coach Stuursma? BI: The thing that excites me most about Coach Stuursma is his desire for people to be the best they can be. He constantly made it apparent that he cares about our future and wants us to be the best we possibly can in every way.
Football season obviously ended a few months ago. What have you been doing during the off-season to prepare for entering your first college football camp? Are you playing any other sports? BI: In the off-season, I lift weights and work on my pass sets and footwork, so I don’t taper off at all from the season. I also throw shotput and disc during the spring season.
What personal and team goals do you have heading into your college football career? BI: Personal goals: I wanna start first year. I know I’m capable of doing that, so that is what I’m working for first year. Team goals: Win the league, and win a championship. Everyone wants to be the best, so I think that’s always the end goal.
Quick questions
a) Favorite Sports team (regardless of sport or level)? BI: Golden State Warriors (love watching Steph play)
b) If you could play any sport OTHER than football or basketball, and be good at it, what sport would you choose? BI: Golf, I love golfing but I am not super good yet.
c) Favorite Sports Movie? BI: The Longest Yard
d) Favorite pre-game hype song? BI: “Used To This” by Future and Drake
e) Final fun fact about you? BI: Last year I listened to over 120,000 minutes of music on Spotify.
Good luck to Brian this fall and all of Hope College Football! Go Dutch!
